The foundation of Rajendras Supermarkets was laid by Mr
Rajendra Prasad, a self-made young entrepreneur from
Vuda, Lautoka. He was the grandson of an indentured
labour who migrated to Fiji Islands in the early 1900s
from the Indian city of Bareilly in Uttar Pradesh. In
1964, at the age of 20, he borrowed 500 pounds from his
father and embarked on his journey in building a
successful business in grocery retailing. His vision was
simple; to provide reasonable priced goods to consumers
while maintaining a safe, convenient and friendly
shopping experience in his stores. Over the next 40
years, Rajendra Prasad along with his cousins and
siblings opened multiple stores throughout Fiji Islands.
By 2010 Rajendra Prasad had sold most of his shares in
the company to his family members. He consolidated his
supermarket business and shifted his focus on real
estate. In 2014 while celebrating his 50 years in
business, he handed over his business to his daughter
Gitanjali Prasad.
Today, Rajendras is one of the most successful “brands”
in supermarket retailing in Fiji Islands. Every week,
100,000 customers pass through their doors and over 500
people across their supplier chain management work hard
to deliver excellent service to their valued customers.
Keeping with their founder’s vision, “Rajendras” is
committed in helping their customers save money on a
daily basis by keeping grocery and variety (appliances,
stationary, toys, health & beauty, religious &
household items) prices low.
